Do you know what I love most about family sessions? Kids being kids. No, really. I love when kids run, play, jump, cuddle their parents, and all of the in between. Why, you may ask? My answer is simple. Kids will be kids. There is no reason for us to try and force them to be anything other than what they truly are.
I looked at my daughter the other day over a cup of coffee which I have every single morning. This time was different though. I swear yesterday she was this tiny little baby wrapped up in a swaddle cuddled up close within my arms. I blinked and she is now two and a half. I swear the threenangers hit our house a few months early- more like half a year but who’s really counting? She can not only walk but run, and boy is she fast. She’s riding not a tricycle but a big girl bike with training wheels. She has her likes and dislikes and voices them openly and regularly. She has an attitude of a thirteen year old and tries to be so very independent that it scares me.
Why am I telling you this? Well, because these years are important. I often wonder how our babies grow so fast. This plays into my main goal with photographing families. I truly try and photograph them the way I would want to remember my own. Sure, we will absolutely get that gorgeous smiling photo but what really tugs at my heart strings are the kisses your babies give you. The hugs where your little one is wrapped around your neck so tight. The tickle fights and the secrets. The ring-around-the-rosie. Them running wild and just being them selves.
When they are fifteen you are going to want to remember them just as they are. Sure, them sticking their tongue out during family photos may not be ideal to you now but if you come back to me ten years from now I bet that will be one of your favorite images. I will forever focus on capturing those belly laughs, your babies being silly, resting their heads on your shoulders and just being themselves.
This is exactly what Rebecca came to me wanting. They have a full house and you can bet it was crazy. I can imagine their home life is the same. Full of love, laughter, and craziness- but a good kind. I always admire parents who are so very patient with so many little ones. They were so calm and peaceful and the silliness of their babies didn’t phase them. I know years from now as their babies continue to grow that they will always look back at their time on Oahu and remember our evening together. Playing along the beach as the sunset. Do you know what’s even more cool? Their children will forever have these memories to cherish even if they cannot recall this time as they grow.
